Okehampton U15…19

Devonport Services U15…27

DEVONPORT Services showed good maturity to win a tough contest against their counterparts at Okehampton.

The deadlock was broken with Services under-15s winning a scrum against the head. The ball moved swiftly out along the backs until it found James Portman who scored in the corner.

Okehampton, however, went into the break 7-5 up when a quick tap and go penalty enabled them to score under the posts.

It wasn’t long before a strong Services surge down the left and exchange of passes involving Liam Weir and Peter Loxdale saw the ball shipped to Elliot Nicholls who scored in the corner. Jamie Campbell slotted a great conversion from near the touchline to make it 12-7 to Services.

A desperate Okehampton defence cracked again and Weir caught the ball and powered his way through to score.

Services were caught napping when Okehampton were awarded a penalty and while the defence gathered their thoughts a quick tap and go and sprint to the corner sneaked a try before anybody had chance to react.

Another great conversion was slotted, again from out wide on the touchline to make it 17-12.

A strong scrum provided a great platform for the Services backs to run a rehearsed move that saw Portman get his brace. Campbell slotted the conversion to make it 24-12.

Okehampton dived in to score and make the finish interesting at 24-19.

Services showed their maturity of thought when a call was made to widen the gap by taking the points on offer. Campbell stepped up and steered the kick through the posts to kill the game at 27-19.

Tavistock U15…12

Teignmouth U15…29

TAVISTOCK were brought down to earth with a bump after defeating Kingsbridge last week.

While captain Theo Cousins tackled fearlessly throughout for Tavvy this was not enough to stop a big, physical Teignmouth side.

There was no score for the first 15 minutes but pressure from the away side led to Tavistock making handling errors and coincided with four Teignmouth tries in the second part of the first half.

Playing down the slope in the second half and with the introduction of George Hillson, Billy McNicol, Billy Rowe and Steve Kirby from the bench, the home team started to get a foothold in the game. Teignmouth scored again before Tavistock really awoke.

Slick handling saw Ben Milligan race in from deep and sidestep the full-back to open Tavistock’s account.

The strong tackling of Rowe disrupted Teignmouth and after brilliantly catching his own kick Hillson kicked again for centre Ethan Lamerton to field the ball and race into the corner.

Tavistock defended bravely to not allow Teignmouth any further scores with Cameron McKie and James Lewis showing good levels of fitness to keep challenging until the end of the match.

Okehampton U14…7

Devonport Services U14…0

SERVICES’ trip to Okehampton always had the potential to be a thriller and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

Services found themselves under early pressure.

The bulky Okehampton pack rumbled the ball forward and set up camp on the away side’s 22.

Only aggressive tackling by Jonah Moore and Jamie Casson saw the ball shepherded into touch.

On a heavy pitch deep in their own 22 Services saw fit to challenge a more than capable Okehampton defence by trying to play their way out of danger. Good line breaks by Devan Marshall, Jamie Casson and Jack Winsor provided relief but it was short-lived as the supporting forwards struggled in heavy conditions to keep up and capitalise on ground made.

Okehampton were quick to nullify the isolated Services attacks.

With only a few minutes remaining on the first half clock Okehampton with one final onslaught managed to grub their way over the line after repeated drives by their big pack.

With a successful conversion and the whistle blowing straight after, the score stood at 7-0.

In the second half Services applied pressure in a mirror image of how Okehampton had played in the first half.

The forwards controlled the ball masterfully and gave the back line plenty of opportunity to probe the Okehampton defence.

A series of busting runs by Kieran Cichocki, Harry Lockley, Tom Ringrose and Callum Weir tested the Okehampton defence to the maximum.

Services offloaded their bench in an effort to provide fresh legs but it was not to be and the final whistle blew.

Plymstock Albion Oaks U13…22 Exeter Chiefs U13…17

PLYMSTOCK Albion Oaks claimed a notable scalp in overcoming visiting Devon rivals Exeter Chiefs.

Oaks’ Harvey Dunn scored the first try and the hosts were committed to applying pressure, as exemplified by Charles Burch and Kieran Wiles-Rouke, whose tackling kept the game flowing.

Luke Harrison’s try came after an intense scrum that gave Kai Harvey the chance to unleash the former’s speed and score under the posts.

The second half saw both teams evenly matched Reece Gocher and Luke Goldstone showed control to give Oaks assertiveness on the pitch.

The last score from Oaks came for Peter Clifford whose deserved try came from a powerful pack maul, Harvey successfully converting.

Devonport Services U11…33 Okehampton U11…26

SERVICES had to work hard to defeat a determined Okehampton team who are fast improving this season.

Okehampton were first to score a try after stretching their legs on the wing to find the corner.

Matthew Richards replied for Services soon after, but the conversion was also missed.

Richards added a second Services try converted by Lloyd Wolaniec before Okes responded to go into half-time drawing 12-12.

Okes resumed their determination after the break and failed tackles by Services allowed Okes to dominate.

Services did, however, take and hold onto the lead after converted tries by Richards, Aden Collis and man of the match Joshua Hemmings.

OPMs U11…0 Ivybridge U11…42

IVYBRIDGE ran in six unanswered tries against a plucky OPMs side in Elburton.

While Ivybridge were in control for a majority of the match the OPMs boys never gave up and tackled hard to the end of the encounter.

After their traditional slow start some Ivybridge phases of play were put together and pressure began to build.

In the second half the green pressure continued. OPMs tried to pass their way out of danger but eventually the mistake came and the backs pounced to score.

There was some strong running from the OPMs scrum-half and fly-half but the Ivybridge defence remained resolute.

Stonehouse Sharks U11…21

Paignton U11…0

THIS was a great display of rugby from Sharks against a good Paignton team.

Great forward play in the scrum and line-out by Ollie Simmons, Neo Ruston and Tom Brookman allowed Sharks to take control.

From a well-formed ruck, scrum-half Foster Parker threw the ball out to Neo Ruston, who ran along the touch line to off-load to Tom Woodward to open the scoring. Harrison Truswell converted.

Paignton kept the pressure on Sharks but excellent defence proved vital for the hosts. Phoebe Bishop made a massive try-saving tackle – and a turnover in play saw the ball come Henry Jamison’s way. Jamison took the ball a pace from the halfway line all the way to score a magical try.

The second half saw some lightning runs by Toby Lean, Johnny Barns and Sam Rhodes out on the wing.

The ball came to Jamie Jagger to pass out to Aaron Duffield who powered through to touch down.

Stonehouse Sharks U10…5

Paignton U10…10 (score in tries)

SHARKS found opponents Paignton too hot to handle.

Sharks fought hard to keep possession and did fight back with two tries.

But Paignton demolished the Sharks with six second half tries.

Stonehouse Sharks U10…2

Paignton U10…6 (score in tries)

SHARKS improved in a second match against Paignton.

Paignton were again first to score as they crossed the line twice, but this time Sharks didn’t leave it too long before they, too, replied twice with tries from Jacob Gaskin.

In the second half Sharks stepped it up again with Gaskin completing his hat-trick. Paignton quickly answered.

Sharks clawed back two tries with Tane Anderson and Gaskin scoring, but it just wasn’t their day.

GIRLS’ RUGBY

Devonport Services U18…46

North Dorset U18…10

DEVONPORT Services swept aside North Dorset in the South West Cup first round.

Services were soon into their stride running the ball at every opportunity.

After a scrum on the North Dorset 22, fly-half Shelby Lee broke through the defence to feed centre Ruby Lee, who powered through to score under the posts for Lottie Holland to add the conversion.

Prop Mia Lawrence added a second try with a third coming from a solo break from the inspirational Holland.

The forwards worked tirelessly and from a darting run by Cloe Waterfield, Bronwen Williams scored in the corner.

There were strong runs from prop Jess Parkes and there was good work in the loose from Lauren Jewell and Chloe Black.

Try of the day came from Sophia Parr who caught a high ball in her own 22 and sprinted the length of the pitch to score.

The team were playing for each other, with great contributions from scrum-half Taylor Gallagher and backs Lucy Bracegirdle and Francesca Bombieri.

The second half was a tighter affair until Holland pounced on a loose ball to score her second try of the day. Shelby Lee cut through the centre to score and Holland added the extra points before Lawrence added the final try for Services.

Devonport Services U15…15

North Dorset U15…21

A LATE Services rally just fell short against strong North Dorset opposition.

Services began the brighter and after good, accurate passing full-back Sammie Harris found some space to run in the first try from just outside the 22. The conversion was missed.

North Dorset came back and scored the next try which was converted.

Scrum-half Mia Welch scored an unconverted try to put Services back in front at 10-7.

Despite more possession Services could not find another score that their domination probably deserved – and they paid the price when North Dorset scored the next two tries, which were converted to take a 21-10 lead.

Services were by now chasing the game and guilty of not letting the ball do the work at times.

They pulled a try back through wing Tizzy Addams to reduce the lead to six points. But dogged North Dorset defending then kept Services at bay.

Despite the defeat there were encouraging performances from Macy Head in only her second game for Services and the ever improving Katelin Goodbourn on the wing.

There were strong performances and carries too from Jess Thomas and Beth Little in the pack.
