PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa – Phil Mack scored two tries as Canada’s men’s rugby sevens team lost to Scotland 19-12 on Sunday in the final of the Shield in Port Elizabeth after defeating Zimbabwe 24-10 earlier.
The semifinal victory over Zimbabwe followed an agonizing extra-time 24-19 defeat to Wales in the tournament’s Bowl quarter-final.
Scotland opened the scoring in the Shield final two minutes in when Lee Jones beat Justin Douglas for pace out wide. The conversion was unsuccessful though.
The Scots added to their lead when Mark Bennett broke in from his own 22 up to the Canadian five-metre line before the recycled ball found Scott Riddell for a try. The kick made it 12-0 for Scotland.
Riddell scored Scotland’s third try just before half, digging a deep hole for Canada.
Mack led Canada’s second-half comeback. The first of his two tries saw him crab across field before getting over the line. The conversion drifted wide, but the Canadians continued to push.
Mack was at it again on eleven minutes as this time he spotted a hole and duly sprinted through it from 20 metres out, making it a one score game at 19-12.
Unfortunately, the referee adjudged Mack’s throw-in at an ensuing line-out to be crooked, keeping the ball out of Canada’s hands until the final whistle.
