DEVON ONE Old Techs…13 Totnes…20

TECHNICIANS’ chairman John Young insisted a stranger to Devon One would have been surprised to learn that the city side were near the bottom of the league, while third-place Totnes were near the top.

He said: “It was an absolute cracker of a game and a great performance by us.

“We went behind after 15 minutes, then it was one-way traffic in our favour, but we just couldn’t get over the Totnes line at the end.”

Techs, who at least took a losing bonus point from the match for their pains, scored tries through Luke Honeychurch and Danny Bond, with the former kicking the vital penalty which won the Plymouth side their point.

Young added: “Our boys really played their socks off. There was a large crowd there and they went away having seen a good game of rugby.”

Elsewhere, Plymstock Albion Oaks defeated Salcombe 17-6 at Horsham, while St Columba and Torpoint had the day off from league action.

DEVON TWO DHSOB…23 Plympton Victoria…15

IT HAS taken eight games, but Devonport High School Old Boys finally got off the mark in the league this season with a victory over winless Plympton Victoria at Stonehouse Creek.

Old Boys’ chairman of rugby Mike Freeman reckoned some members of his team panicked because they were not used to being ahead in a match.

“Now we’re going to launch our assault on the top of the table,” said a joking Freeman.

“We’ve worked it out that if we win all our remaining games with maximum points we could just about win it.”

Old Boys had to put their celebrations on hold after Plym-Vic took the lead with an unconverted try.

Hot shot Alex Buckley kicked two penalties to give the hosts a 6-5 lead but the visitors scored an unconverted try to regain the advantage.

However, Old Boys trio Lewis Jeffery, George Quinn and Dan Bulley gave their team a 23-10 lead before Plym-Vic nicked a late try.

Dartmouth…21 Tamar Saracens…20

SARRIES coaches Dan Leeson and Ray Hancock were still trying to work out how the city side blew a 20-6 lead at mid-table Dartmouth long after the match had finished.

Hancock said: “I’m not quite sure what happened – we got the 20 points and I honestly thought we were going to get more and win the game.

“Dartmouth’s forwards looked exhausted, but they’ve got a few old heads and they out-scrummaged us to get back into the game.

“The boys are inclined to blame the referee for a few bad decisions, but my feeling is that if we are going to let ourselves be outscrummaged, then we only have ourselves to blame.”

Aaron Webb, Aiden Stringer and Scott Sheldon got the tries which gave promotion-hunting Sarries their losing bonus point, before it all started to go horribly wrong.

Elsewhere, leaders Plymouth Argaum gained an impressive 29-6 victory at Ilfracombe to go five points clear.

CORNWALL ONE Liskeard-Looe…53 Stithians…0

UNBEATEN Liskeard-Looe continue to dominate Cornwall One with an emphatic nine-try victory over an out-classed Stithians at Lux Park

The Lions went on the rampage from the off, piling pressure on the visitors, who conceded the game’s first points following a fine, passing move which concluded with centre Mark Moody running in for a try from 35 metres. Outside-half Ben added the extras for 7-0.

Five minutes later Baz Hocking kicked ahead and forced the defence to kick the ball dead. From the ensuing five-metres scrum the Lions’ pack drove Stithians back and number eight Yestin Hutchings dotted down the unconverted pushover try.

Stithians missed an opportunity to put points on the board from a penalty, before on 25 minutes, Liskeard increased their advantage through full-back Mike Charlwood, who crossed the whitewash for an unconverted try.

On the half-hour Lions scored a text book try with a line-out on the right, producing a top ball from Hutchings, excellent handling by the backs, allowing wing Pete Regan to cross for an unconveted try on the left and a bonus point.

However, there was still time for Liskeard to run in another try before the break, as in first half stoppage time lock Tom Blake set the backs moving, with a clever chip from Hocking, which fed Charlwood to run in for his second try and stretch the hosts lead to 27-0 at half-time.

Within four minutes of the restart, at a Stithians’ scrum deep in their 22, the ball went loose for the Lions’ scrum-half to pounce and pick up and cross for a try. Replacement full-back James Noel-Johnson added the extras for 34-0.

A Miller try made it 39-0 before Hocking crossed the whitewash and Noel-Johnson converted to take the score to 46-0.

Stithians missed another penalty, but Lions dominance continued and they reached a half entury in points through Noel-Johnson’s try which the scorer converted.

With the visitors now reduced to 13 men, due to injury and a couple others ‘walking wounded’ the referee blew for time early to prevent further injuries.
