The adventure challenge sees teams of between three and six people join the 54-mile hike, which follows a route through Blairgowrie, Spittal of Glenshee and Kirton of Glenisla.

Wainwright, who was a doctor for 12 years in the Royal Army Medical Corps, said: “I’m really proud to be supporting our soldiers and their families by taking part in the 2014 Yomp. Hiking 54 miles in 24 hours is quite a challenge but achievable by anyone with good preparation, though there may be some pain and blisters.

“This is a chance to train really hard to raise money for some brilliant causes, to work together as a team and feel the satisfaction of crossing the finish line.”

Katherine Garrett-Cox, Chief Executive of Alliance Trust, added: “Over the last three years the Yomp has raised more than £1 million for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and community projects across Scotland. I’m proud to say Alliance Trust and our teams have played a big part in this fundraising for these worthy causes.

“We are delighted to be supporting this event again next year and are already encouraged by the support of Yompers.”
