The Wyong Roos notched their fourth win of the season on Sunday holding off a gallant Canterbury Bulldogs comeback to prevail 26-24 at Kanwal.
A frenetic opening half saw a deluge of points as eight tries were racked up despite the slushy surface.
The first of these four pointers arrived early in proceedings when Jono Ford sent Etu Uaisele over for the simplest of tries after the Bulldogs left edge ran short on numbers.
Four became eight when Wyong winger Arthur Brown cashed in on a tricky Matt Nelson grubber to score the Roos second in quick succession.
Canterbury began the game conceding a number of penalties and the Roos took full advantage, extending their lead to 14-0 when Ford hit Grant Nelson with a flat ball from 10 metres out for Wyong’s third try of the afternoon.
The Dogs were desperate for a change of momentum and a dropped ball from the kick off invited them back into the contest with Kris Keating spreading the ball left for Brett Lane to claim the Belmore teams opening try.
The Roos lead was cut to four minutes later when Keating and Joel Romelo combined to send Paul Carter over for the Dogs second.
A superb 40/20 from Jono Ford gained momentum for Wyong, and a Mitch William’s grubber out of dummy half saw Todd Wilson win the race to the in-goal for the home side.
Wyong extended their lead further when Williams put Leivaha Pulu away down centre field and the big forward found Brock Molan backing up for a spectacular team try.
Things were looking grim for Canterbury, however a second try to winger Lane in the final minute of the half following a clever cross field kick from Keating narrowed the margin with Wyong ahead 26-14 at the break.
A rejuvenated Bulldogs team grabbed the initiative early in the second half when Keating and Lafai combined to send Paul Carter over to reduce the deficit to eight.
Wyong seemed to have lost their spark when Jack Littlejohn put a rampaging Makahesi Makatoa over beside the posts, However Wyong dug deep during the final fifteen minutes to record a nail biting 26-24 win.
The Roos will face the North Sydney Bears in Round 17 of the VB NSW Cup, whilst the Bulldogs will host the second placed Newcastle Knights.
