British and Irish Lions second five-eighths Jamie Roberts has secured his life after rugby by qualifying as a doctor. But that didn’t stop him thinking he could be invalided home from the tour of Australia after a hamstring injury before the Test series. Roberts had the aid of Lions medical staff to get him back into action ready to play in the final Test where he rewarded their work by scoring one of the side’s four tries in their 41-16 win at ANZ Stadium. Roberts told Walesonline.co.uk that as he walked off the pitch with his injury in the game against the Waratahs he thought his tour was over. “I owe a massive thanks to the medical team who worked wonders with my rehab,” he said. “I had a scan the day after the injury and they then sat me down and said they would keep me on tour. They said to stay positive and they would do everything in their power to get me fit. “In the end the gods smiled on me,” he said. Playing in the third Test had been a dream come true and scoring a try made it even better. “Looking back on the Lions tour, it was an incredible achievement for everyone involved and it’s a memory that will last a lifetime. The tour was awesome,” he said. “Going into the third Test, there was a lot of flak coming our way and certainly our coach was having a lot of flak coming his way. To through that third Test in the fashion we did was magnificent,” he said. “For everyone, the coaches, the backroom staff, the players, it was an incredible achievement. “It was all a bit of a rollercoaster, but ultimately our primary goal was to win the Test series and we managed to achieve that,” Roberts said. The Welshman has been busy setting up his future since his return. He graduated from Cardiff University’s School of Medicine and set up his living quarters in Paris where he is set to join Racing Metro for his future club rugby. Roberts was able to juggle his studies taking four years to do his last two years of study, part-time. He sat his final exams in the lead-up to Wales’ key Six Nations victory over England. He will delay taking up his junior doctor roles to complete his rugby career, one of the consequences would be having to cope with some of his fellow students ending up being his boss by getting straight into their careers.
