A late try to Corey Thompson gave the Bulldogs an upset win over the Windsor Wolves on the weekend, keeping Windsor outside the top-four heading into Round 20 of the VB NSW Cup.
The Bulldogs dominated the early exchanges on the back of consecutive penalties; however it was the Wolves who opened the scoring when Vaipuna Tia Kalifi took on the Bulldogs right edge on halfway before slipping a beautiful offload to his centre Geoff Daniela who linked with Eto Nabuli to score under the posts and give Windsor a 6-0 lead.
Failure to diffuse a bomb left the Bulldogs looking red-faced when Luke Capewell raced through to ground the ball and extend Windsorâs lead to 12-0 after 15 minutes.
The Bulldogs hit back with quick fire tries to Kris Keating, with a brilliant show and go, and Lauchlan Burr, who capitalised on a bustling line-break from Harlan Alaalatoa to level the scores at 12-12.
The Bulldogs began to exploit Windsorâs right side defence with Tim Lafai making several incisive runs and finally scoring from dummy half to give the Dogs the lead for the first time in the game.
A loose ball from Canterbury allowed Capewell to combine with Nabuli for a long-range try against the run of play, but once again it was Keating who got his side back into the lead with a short ball to Danny Galea giving the Bulldogs a 22-18 halftime lead.
Windsor dominated the opening twenty minutes of the second half with Toby Evans crossing the line early, and Nabuli collecting his third of the afternoon to give the Wolves a 30-22 lead with a quarter of the game remaining.
Poor execution by Windsor allowed the Bulldogs to stay in the game and they were to made to pay when Keating scored his second try of the game from close range with another show and go to reduce the deficit to 30-28.
With seconds remaining, Lafai once again split the Windsor defence and produced a deft flick pass to Thompson to score in the corner and give the Bulldogs a well-earned upset victory.
The Bulldogs will face Mounties at Aubrey Keech Reserve in Round 21, while Windsor host the Newtown Jets in a battle for the top four, that promises to be one of the games of the season.
