Rugby League - Smith sticking with Melbourne Storm

The 30-year-old Storm captain has rejected an offer from Brisbane Broncos and accepted a multi-million dollar deal believed to be one of the biggest in the game’s history.

Melbourne ended the long-running speculation over the future of the Queensland and Kangaroos skipper with an announcement on their website on Monday and will unveil more details at a media conference at AAMI Park on Tuesday, with Smith, coach Craig Bellamy and chief executive Mark Evans in attendance.

The media conference coincides with preparations for Smith’s record-breaking 263rd NRL game for the Storm.

The contract until the end of 2018 will see the hooker finish his playing days in Melbourne after joining the club in 2002.

The new deal will put Smith in reach of catching Broncos legend Darren Lockyer, who is the NRL’s all-time record holder with 355 first grade appearances.

Smith will overtake Matt Geyer for all-time appearances for Melbourne on Saturday against Penrith at AAMI Park.
