Mike Brown: Scored four tries for England in the Six Nations

England full-back Mike Brown has been named Player of the Championship for the 2014 Six Nations.

The Harlequins ace produced eye-catching performances in each of England’s five matches in the competition, and he earned the coveted award ahead of Ireland pair Brian O’Driscoll and Andrew Trimble.

Brown received over 34% of the votes cast by around 68,000 rugby fans to claim the honour won by Wales full-back Leigh Halfpenny last season.

Ireland centre O’Driscoll, who retired from international rugby as a Six Nations champion after Saturday’s thrilling win in France, finished second on 28 per cent, with team-mates Trimble, Jonathan Sexton and Rob Kearney completing the top five.

Scotland No 8 David Denton came in sixth ahead of England scrum-half Danny Care.

Brown scored four tries in the competition as he posted superb all-round statistics, beating 25 defenders on 65 carries and gaining over 540 metres while not conceding a single penalty.

“I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who voted for me to be RBS 6 Nations Player of the Championship,” Brown said.

Proud

“I am extremely grateful and proud to win this award, particularly as it’s decided by the supporters.

“I am very proud of what Mike and the whole squad – players, coaches and management – have achieved this RBS 6 Nations. We are really looking forward to building on this as we head to New Zealand in the summer for our tour.”

“Finally, a big thank you to all my team-mates, back-room staff, and coaches for all the help they’ve given me through the tournament. I couldn’t perform on the field without them, and it’s great to have that support.”

England head coach Stuart Lancaster added: “Congratulations to Mike for winning this accolade.
