The Kick, a film dramatising the story of former Bath Rugby fly-half Stephen Donald’s journey from All Black discard to World Cup hero, has been shown on New Zealand television.
David de Lautour played Donald, who was famously left out of the All Blacks’ squad for the 2011 World Cup in his home country but was recalled – while on a fishing trip – for the final after injuries to Dan Carter and Colin Slade.
Aaron Cruden then limped off in the first half against France, meaning it was left to replacement Donald – nicknamed the Beaver – to kick the winning penalty and secure his place in All Blacks legend.
Donald, who had signed for Bath just before the World Cup, spent two years at The Rec before leaving for current club Mitsubishi Dynaboars in Japan.
The Kick was shown on TV One in New Zealand on Sunday evening local time.
De Lautour told TVNZ’s Breakfast: “A lot of the stories you will see on the screen on Sunday night is stuff that he’s brought up from his life and it’s pretty amazing.
“We get a much more personal look at the story behind the guy.”
