Rugby history used to trigger memories of people with dementia

A project that uses sporting history to trigger the memories of people with dementia has been piloted at a Milngavie rugby club.

Rugby Memories, run by Alzheimer Scotland, uses photographs and stories from previous decades to help those living with the disease keep their memories alive and boost their self-confidence.

The project at the West of Scotland Rugby Club follows in the footsteps of a similar initiative using football.

Another project is based on shinty, and there are plans for future initiatives using images from cricket, golf and classic films.

Rugby Memories has the backing of former international player, Sandy Carmichael. The former British Lion and Barbarian was in Milngavie on Thursday to help launch the project.

Around 18,000 Scots are living with dementia and it is hoped that this and similar schemes can help them tackle the battles they face.
