Rugby player Lawrence Dallaglio slams NHS as a "disgrace"

SABR is a revolutionary treatment because it targets the tumour very precisely and allows patients to be treated without debilitating invasive surgery. On average, patients need a course of five treatments compared to 25 for standard radiotherapy and can usually return home same day.

It is widely used across the continent but according to official figures the number of people being offered it in England has fallen by more than 10 per cent since NHS England took control in April last year.

Mr Dallaglio wrote: “The way NHS England are approaching this is turning the clock back on the way we’re treating cancer. We’re not just standing still and doing nothing, we’re turning the clock back . It angers me.”

Tomorrow he will hold a meeting in the House of Commons with 30 or more MPs and leading cancer clinicians to draw attention to the deal being blocked.

Dr Sean Duffy, NHS England’s National Clinical Director For Cancer, said: “If money were no object it would be great to fund every experimental treatment that we are lobbied on, but that’s not the reality, so instead our priority this year has been investing hundreds of millions of pounds in cancer and other specialised treatments that are actually proven to work for patients.”
