University of Gloucestershire All Golds saw their run of four Kingstone Press Championship One victories come to an end as visiting Hemel Stags won 22-14 in Cheltenham.

The Stags controlled the game from the off and built a 16-0 lead after the opening quarter thanks to a touchdown and two conversions from Barry John Swindells, plus tries from Evan Simons and Eddie Mbaraga.

The All Golds’ revival started shortly afterwards as Aidan Jenkins went over straight from a scrum and Matt Bradley converted.

Phil Cowburn then ghosted through the Stags’ defence to score and Jenkins finished a move to leave the All Golds trailing 16-14 at the break. However, James Hill scored the only try of the second half for the Stags and Swindells’ penalty five minutes from time sealed the win. York City Knights remain three points clear at the top of the table after their 30-20 win away to London Skolars.

Bristol Sonics secured their first Conference South League win of the season as they bid farewell to coach Aran Simm ahead of his year-long visit to Australia with 30 unanswered second-half points for a 46-18 victory over Oxford Cavaliers.

The Sonics’ star player was full-back Michael Harrison, whose brace of touchdowns and five conversions, as well as setting-up countless other scores, prompted the win. Will Tobin, Tony Harvey, Dan Harvey, Ryan Goodman, Joe Singleton and Jack Farler also crossed the whitewash, while Wes Newton scored a hat-trick for the visitors.

A try from veteran Tristan Moore, converted by youngster Harry Brooker, gave Bristol Sonics A victory against Swindon St George. The match was the curtain- raiser in the Super Sonics Saturday festival of Rugby League and saw the home side secure their second West of England League win in a row. Liam Rowe and Sam Argent helped Swindon into an 12-0 lead, but the Sonics hit back with tries from Rob Bell and Johan Schoeman, before Gwyn Jenkins stretched Swindon’s lead again. However, Bell scored again before Moore made the vital intervention for the hosts.

West of England League leaders Cheltenham Old Patesians ran out 64-28 winners at Somerset Vikings. The visitors played some impressive rugby with four tries each from Ben Tupper and Dave Simpson taking them four points clear at the top.

Old Patesians were always in control of the game as they ran in 12 tries in total with Carlo Colucci crossing twice, and adding eight goals, while Jake Fautley and Ryan Tanner also crossed the line. Chris Richards (2), Ryan Rossiter, Alex Johnson, Jay Hill and Anthony Coates scored for Somerset.
