The MP for Maidstone and the Weald, Kent was speaking as Premiership Rugby clubs across England were being honoured at the prestigious All Party Parliamentary Rugby Union Group Premiership Rugby Community Awards, staged at the House of Commons.
The Awards were attended by a number of MPs, Premiership Rugby partners and Rugby World Cup winner Jason Robinson.
Now in their ninth year, the Awards celebrate the wide range of development work that the Premiership Rugby clubs deliver locally within their communities.
From sports participation to education, health and social inclusion, Premiership Rugby’s Play and BreakThru campaigns use rugby to change lives and tackle some of England’s most challenging agendas.
“Sport has the power to deliver social change and I’m delighted to see the 12 Aviva Premiership Rugby clubs continue to make working within their local community a priority,” said Minister for Sport Helen Grant.
“Premiership Rugby is doing a tremendous amount through social inclusion programmes such as HITZ and Something to Chew On and I would like to congratulate all the winners for the fantastic work that has been achieved in the last year.
“The Premiership Rugby Community Awards are honouring all the unsung heroes working within the game and recognise the crucial and important work that often goes unseen during the rugby season.”
