Warren Gatland"s gutted as Wales pay the penalty

Liam Williams collided with Cornal Hendricks and referee Steve Walsh awarded a penalty try, giving Morne Steyn a straightforward conversion from in front of the posts.

But Gatland was furious with the poor decision-making by his side late in the game that cost Wales a shock win in Nelspruit after losing the first Test 38-16 in Durban.

Wales were penalised at a scrum, allowing the springboks to kick deep into their territory and attack.

He said: “We had crucial scrum with a few minutes to go. Those are the critical moments and you have to be 100 per cent accurate.”

Wales had the chance to attack after the penalty try but Dan Biggar missed a drop-goal having sent one short moments earlier.

“I don’t think we got the last kick right,” said Gatland.

“Mike Phillips made a bit of a break and we needed to get our backs on the right side of the field.

“Dan had already missed the first one from 40metres and he missed the next one from 50m.

“We must make sure when those opportunities come along we have to be accurate.”

Biggar opened the scoring with a penalty before Wales extended their advantage to 10 points when Jamie Roberts dived under the posts after Alex Cuthbert had surged into a gap.

Three minutes later and the lead was stretched to 17-0 as Wales bulldozed close and Cuthbert finished off the move.
