Dunedin Venues Management Limited (DVML) made the comments after a post-match review.
Mr Hempopo’s mother defended her son who was reportedly recently named in New Zealand’s Canterbury rugby squad.
Speaking to website TVNZ, Sandra Hempopo said: “He was just doing his job and I think a lot of it has been escalated through social media but there seems to be a lot of support out there for him as well.
“He did the job that he was told to do and he was told if an invader went on the pitch, he had to tackle them and that’s why they wear their rugby boots on the sideline.”
