These are the horrific injuries that ended the career of rugby league star Sean Gleeson after he was attacked outside a nightclub.


The pictures show the player in his hospital bed shortly after three men rounded on him outside a bar in Wigan.


The former Salford Red Devils player, who transferred to Hull Kingston Rovers at the start of this season, tweeted a picture of himself covered in blood with a swollen eye.


He added: ‘These are the injuries from assault #dogs #ruinedmylife’.


Mr Gleeson, 26, had been on a night out at Ibiza Bar in Wigan on March 2 when the group set upon him.


Despite being taken direct to hospital and treated for his wounds, the full-back has been forced to retire.


His club confirmed his retirement from the game ‘with immediate effect’.


A statement from Hull KR said the Wigan-born player had been advised by medical experts not to continue with his career.


Gleeson, who also played as a full-back, winger and centre for home-town club Wigan, Widnes and Wakefield, said: ‘It is with saddened regret that I have made the decision to retire from the great sport of rugby league.’


He thanked Hull KR for their support and said he had faced a difficult time coming to terms with the news.


Mr Gleeson has been retweeting messages of support from fans since the announcement.



Sean Seddon tweeted: ‘Sorry to hear you have to hang up your boots, you were an awesome player, from a St Helens fan.’


Although police launched an appeal at the time of the attack and released CCTV of the incident, no one has been charged.

Two men aged 21 and 24, arrested on suspicion of assault, were released on bail until later this month pending further inquiries.


A third man, 28, was later released without charge.


During his career, Mr Gleeson had 134 career appearances, scoring 37 tries.


He also represented Ireland at the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.
