England were far too strong for error-strewn Italy who were on the backfoot from the start. Italy’s pack were blown away while they had no answer to the power and penetration of the England backs. England ran in nine tries, Nathan Earle scoring three of them including two in little over a minute early in the second half with blistering pace.

New Zealand turned in a patchy performance in beating Samoa 48-12, the margin of victory given a flattering look by them scoring three late tries after the Samoans had recovered from 22-0 down to 27-12 on the hour. In between a solid start and clinical finish, New Zealand were often out muscled and forced to defend their line against sustained attacks.

South Africa completely outplayed and dominated Scotland, running in nine tries in a 61-5 win in Auckland. Starting well, Scotland crashed over early for their only points of the match, while South Africa struggled to fire but managed a 14-5 lead into the second half. Coming out firing after the break, the Junior Springboks were unstoppable in defence and attack as they scored seven unanswered tries.

Fiji went down 48-19 to a dominant Wales side in Pukekohe. Opening the match with an early score, Wales piled on the points throughout the first half with Fiji fighting hard to stay in the hunt. Wales dominated throughout, scoring four tries as well as gaining an extra two penalty-tries during their bonus-point win. Struggling to keep up with the rampaging Welsh side, Fiji were punished for their ill-discipline but managed to find their way over the line for three tries.

Australia kicked off their Junior World Cup campaign with a convincing 36-17 win over Argentina. Australia led throughout, dominating the set-piece and punishing Argentina at scrum time to lay the foundation for their four-try victory. Australia converted three penalty goals before crossing for the tournament’s first try, but Argentina hit back quickly and were still in the hunt going into the second half trailing 16-10. Australia then took control, adding three more tries. Former Australian Schoolboys star Andrew Kellaway was the pick of the Australian backs with two tries.

The tightest game of the day came at North shore City where France beat Ireland 19-10, almost all the scoring coming in the first half.
