NORTH Devon Raiders returned beaten but unbowed from their visit to Cornish Rebels at Redruth.
Martyn Lawrance scored a hat-trick of tries in a 67-16 win for the South West Challenge Cup holders on Saturday.
It was a second defeat in their opening two games of the South West Premier League season for Raiders who will aim to bounce back at Devon Sharks on Saturday, June 14.
Lawrance opened the scoring for Rebels with an effort under the posts just five minutes in.
Grant Thirlby failed to add the extras but made up for that a few minutes later as he converted Ethan Pattisonâs try to put Rebels 10-0 up.
Thirlby continued to boss the game and scored a try of his own, which he converted.
A late Lawrance offload in the corner put in Raphael Baragwanath for his first Rebels try.
Shortly after, head coach Jonny Platt found himself in front of the posts and, faced by a wall of Raiders defenders, opted to kick over for a single point.
Jono Jones came off the bench to touch down before the first Raiders try came from full back Ashley Deakin. Half back Mike Prestedge added the goal.
There was time for one more try before half time, Baragwanath running 65 metres and just outpacing Prestedge.
The second half also started with a Lawrance try, after which Prestedge scored and converted one for Raiders to make it 41-12 with 20 minutes to go.
Tries followed from Rebelsâ James Wilson and Elliot Heard before Nathan Allen ran almost the length of the pitch for the try of the game.
Mike Peek crossed for Raidersâ third try but efforts from Scott Murray and Lawrance completed the rout.
In the other South West Premier League game, Devon Sharks opened their new ground in Torquay with a 30-18 victory over leaders Exeter Centurions.
