Bristol Sonics in search of first Rugby League win

BRISTOL Sonics coach Aran Simm admits his side’s first win of the season needs to come sooner rather than later.

The Sonics fell to their seventh consecutive defeat in Conference League South, going down 50-14 to Valley Cougars at Blackwood.

Coach Simm admitted that it was another disappointing afternoon, and that the players ran out of juice in the last 25 minutes.

He said: “We’ll dust ourselves down and go again – it’s important that we get our first win of the season sooner rather than later.”

Again undone by defensive lapses, Bristol started poorly and were soon 16-0 down following Cougar’s scores from Chris Speck, Dan Davies and Martin Luckwell, two of which were converted by Lee Goddard.

The Sonics battled back, though, and by half time had reduced the arrears to eight points through tries from club stalwart Joe Singleton and prop Tony Harvey, the latter after a break from centre Chris Blythe.

The home side came out after the interval in uncompromising mood and soon extended their lead to 26-8, Scott Britton with the try.

The Sonics hit back shortly afterwards thanks to a try from University of Gloucestershire All Golds’ captain Mike Stewart who appeared for the Sonics under dual registration, but it wasn’t long before Bristol were looking at another heavy defeat.

The floodgates opened in the final 30 minutes, with the Cougars adding further tries from Britton, Ryan Davies (2) and Dan Davies, Mike Rowe adding a trio of conversions.

The loss leaves the Sonics rooted to the bottom of Conference League South ahead of a tricky trip to Nottingham Outlaws, who are second in the table with eight points from seven games, this Saturday.

The club’s second XIII enjoyed a better afternoon, though, notching up nine tries to beat Somerset Vikings 50-26 in the West of England League.
