THE RUGBY CLUB

This week we reflect on the opening games in the Six Nations and look forward to this weekend’s action.

Alex Payne will be joined by Stuart Barnes, Scott Quinnell and Mike Friday to discuss the fortunes of England, Wales and more.

A disastrous opening period and a dramatic finale meant England – despite playing much of the better rugby – left Paris full of regret and fielding reprisals in the press after their defeat by France.

But what were the true reasons for defeat: Stuart Lancaster’s use of his bench? The callowness of his backline? The quality of France?

The Scots lived with Ireland for 40 minutes last weekend but were ultimately swatted aside by Joe Schmidt’s side, who will face a sterner test of their Championship-winning potential when they take on Wales in what could be one of the games of the tournament on Saturday.

The Welsh eventually overcame Italy in the opening match of the tournament but Warren Gatland will be confident his side can step up their performance against the Irish in Dublin.

On Sunday, the French will look to back up their win over England with a more convincing performance against the Italians.

We’ll also have action from the women’s Six Nations tournament and there’s a special report on the surprise promotion pacesetters in the Championship, Rotherham.

This week’s subject for our Top Three is classic comebacks and there’s another Rugby Roots which features international players from the Rugby Clubs of Staines, Finchley and Barking.

And squeezed into a bumper show, we look ahead to the latest HSBC World Sevens Series event in Wellington and review last weekend’s decisive games in the LV=Cup.
