Rugby World Cup: Labour calls for ban on ticket touting

It comes as a number of websites already offer high priced tickets for matches

during the event, even though no tickets will go on sale officially until

the autumn.

Four tickets can be bought for England’s group match against Austrialia for

£3,700 on one web site, which is also offering tickets for the Final for

more than £8,000 each. The face value is £350.

With tickets for the World Cup being sent to rugby clubs in May and going on

general sale this autumn, Labour says it is urgent that the Government

legislate to protect genuine rugby fans from being exploited by organised

gangs of ticket touts.

Mr Efford is offering to cooperate fully with the Coalition to get the

legislation through Parliament in time for the tickets to go on sale.

He said: “We have offered to work with the Government to ensure legislation to

protect Rugby World Cup fans is in place when tickets go on sale.

“If the Government refuses to act, tickets will be hoovered up by

organised gangs of touts and genuine fans will be forced to pay extortionate

prices in the secondary market.

“We are asking Rugby fans to sign our petition to make it clear to the

Government that they must act to ensure tickets go to genuine fans.”

Labour will be is asking MPs and parliamentary candidates to write to rugby

clubs in their constituency to sign a petition to protect World Cup tickets

from being bought up by touts.
