Scunthorpe Rugby Union Club once again resurrected their home form with a resounding win at Heslam Park against struggling Syston.
The Leicestershire side are well drilled by their ex-Leicester Tigers flanker Chris Tarbuck and pressured the Scunthorpe line against the strong wind for a good ten minutes.
They came away with a converted try from the influential utility back Ian Smith.
The Syston pack kept good possession and then Smith took advantage of an overlap to stroll over to score the try. He then converted for the extra two points. The Greens took some time to settle into any kind of rhythm. From the resulting kick off Syston knocked on but the Scunthorpe scrum were uncharacteristically shunted off the ball and lost the initiative. The pack kicked into gear and began to use their power to pressurise Syston, a penalty saw Steve Johnson collect three points.
Another penalty saw Tom Foster put the ball on the opposition 22. A catch and drive saw the pack rumble over the line expertly marshalled by Dave Garbutt who scored the try. Johnson converted despite the swirling wind.
Just before half time the Greens were once again camped in the Syston 22 and kept recycling the ball methodically. Rewiti âWoodyâ Vaimoso found himself at fly half and dodged over to score under the posts. Steve Johnson converted and the home side went to into the half time break justifiable ahead 17 – 7.
Syston started the second half like a house on fire and really put the Scunthorpe defence to the sword. For a good fifteen minutes they used the strong wind and pounded the line, crossing twice only to be disallowed by the referee.
Despite two penalties and several scrums on the five metre line the stoic Scunthorpe defence prevented any score. Matt Power stole at least two of the Syston line outs to add to this repost.
To rub salt into the wound Vaimoso broke out of the 22 and Scunthorpe marched on using good support play. The Scunthorpe pack drove the Syston scrum off the ball and Dave Garbutt claimed his second try to almost put the Greens out of sight.
Once again Johnson struck a great conversion and the Greens were now 24 â 7 ahead.
Scunthorpe came back at Syston with gusto, a daft penalty saw the away team hoof the ball clear but it failed to find touch.
Steve Johnson countered and strong running from Ash Dibden saw Tom Foster in support to score the bonus point try. Johnson kept up his 100% kicking record and at 31 â 7 the Greens were home and dry.
Nick Dyson finished off with a well-deserved try, this time Johnson missed the conversion.
The last play of the day saw Syston score through flanker Matt Ferguson, Smith converted and Scunthorpe ran out well deserved winners 36 â 14.
