BRISTOL Rugby and James Merriman have been rocked by the news that the flanker has been forced to retire from professional rugby with immediate effect.
The 30-year-old, who made 102 appearances for Bristol and scored 27 tries, suffered a knee injury in the British Irish Cup defeat at Leeds last month.
Based on the advice of leading knee specialist Jonathan Webb, the former Bristol and England full-back, Merriman has been forced to retire.
âThis news has come as a massive shock to me and Iâm disappointed to not be able to continue playing,â said Merriman, who joined Bristol in 2009.
âItâs been a privilege to represent Bristol Rugby over the past five seasons. Iâve really enjoyed working with Robbo (Andy Robinson).
âHe was a similar player to me and we have a good understanding. Robbo has supported me through this difficult period and shown loyalty to me, which I really appreciate.
âIâve been fortunate enough to play alongside some fantastic players over the years and have made some lifelong friends.
âThe Bristol supporters are incredible â playing at the Memorial Stadium in front of that tremendous backing is one of the reasons that this club is so special.
âIâve experienced a great career and hold many fond memories. Unfortunately, I have been told that my knee can no longer cope with the demands of professional rugby and it is now time to pursue a new chapter in my life.
âI will continue to be a Bristol Rugby supporter and will be doing everything I can to support the play-off push this season.â
Merriman has been invited to aid Bristolâs play-off push by remaining involved with the club for the rest of the season. His roles could include analysing opponents and helping Sean Holley on the defensive side.
Director of rugby Robinson paid tribute to âone of the most revered back-rowers in the clubâs recent historyâ.
He said: âJames sets the highest standards in everything he does and weâre sad to see his career cut short by injury.
âThe leadership qualities and commitment that he brought to the Bristol shirt every time he played makes James one of the most revered back-rowers in the clubâs recent history.
âEverybody at Bristol Rugby â team-mates, supporters and coaching staff â thank him for his valued contribution.â
Merriman also represented Gloucester and Neath, as well as captaining Wales to a Grand Slam at under-21 level and winning the Rugby World Cup Sevens with his country in 2009.
