RUGBY LEAGUE will be on show at this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with Jamaica to turn out its own side for the exhibition games.

Five of the Commonwealth regions will feature, including teams from South Africa, Canada, England, Scotland, Wales, Australia and Papua New Guinea – and of course the Jamaicans.

They will be played in a 9s format by Under-19 players, and the championship will take place on June 27 and 28.

Rugby League was accepted as a Commonwealth Games sport following a review carried out in 2011.

The matches are set to happen at the Broadwood Stadium.

Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) chief executive Mike Hooper said: “CGF wishes all participants every success, the advent of these Championships is a true demonstration of the RLIF’s commitment to further developing the sport across the Commonwealth.”

Rugby League International Federation chairman Scott Carter added: “Since becoming a member of the CGF in 2011, rugby league has remained true to the message that shaped our application, that it is truly a sport of the Commonwealth.

“We are committed to working to develop the sport in these regions. Our grassroots work continues at a steady pace in Africa, for example, and it was important for the RLIF to bring together teams from all corners of the Commonwealth in what promises to be a true celebration of rugby league.”

Jamaica have been placed in Pool A along with Australia, Wales and Scotland.
