Wallabies Coach Deans Steps Down, Australian Rugby Union Says

Robbie Deans stepped down as

Wallabies coach, the Australian Rugby Union said.

Deans, a New Zealander who took over as Australia’s first

non-native coach in 2008, advised the Sydney-based ARU of his

decision yesterday, two days after the Wallabies’ 41-16 loss to

the British and Irish Lions in their series-deciding Test.

“As a consequence of a coaching review process that has

been ongoing through 2013, we are also in a position to make a

further announcement on the coaching position – and name

Robbie’s replacement – later today,” ARU Chief Executive

Officer Bill Pulver said in an e-mailed statement.

Newspapers including the Sydney Morning Herald reported

that Queensland Reds director of coaching Ewen McKenzie will

replace Deans.
