New Zealander Deans resigned in the wake of the Wallabies’ 2-1 series defeat by the British and Irish Lions.
McKenzie, 48, who made 51 appearances for Australia at prop before turning to coaching, said: “It’s a really important time in Australian rugby.
“People will worry about where the Wallabies are at on the field. I’m looking forward to the challenge of making a difference in that and in the game as a whole.â€
