Lydia Thompson of England breaks through the Samoa defence, England v Samoa, 2014 Women

England’s Lydia Thompson has been ruled out of the rest of the 2014 Women’s Rugby World Cup with a groin injury.

Thompson will be replaced by Richmond’s Natasha Brennan, who has also represented England at hockey.

“This is unfortunate for Lydia,” coach Gary Street said. “But it is fantastic to call up Natasha. She missed out by the narrowest of margins.”

England have a maximum haul of 10 points from their first two matches heading into Saturday’s final Pool A match against Canada, having beaten Samoa and Spain.
