Under the watchful eye of the London Welsh Community Team, led by team leader Matt Walsh and Adam Copperwheat, with the assistance of Witney RFC’s London Welsh liaison officer Mick Routledge, the camp drew children from Witney RFC, Grove RFC, Chipping Norton RFC, Abingdon RFC, Didcot RFC and Oxford RFC to Witney’s Hailey Road ground in Oxfordshire.
Day one saw the children, who ranged between 6-11 years of age, split into three age groups.
The emphasis for the youngest group over the three days will be on the core skills of catching and passing, support and evasion and trying to improve their tactical awareness in Tag Rugby.
The older age groups’ focus will be shaped around the four core skills; catch and pass, the tackle, the breakdown and support and evasion.
All of the sessions will take a game sensed approach and will be player centred so that the players actively contribute to the running and development of the sessions. This will allow for greater enjoyment and a clearer understanding of how the core skills fit in to a game.
The culmination of the three-day course will see London Welsh first-team players Seb Jewell and Lachlan McCaffrey in attendance on the last day (Aug 21) to present the children with their certificates for completing the camp.
London Welsh Community Development Officer Adam Copperwheat, said: “It’s really pleasing to see so many children booked on the rugby camp and particularly pleasing to see it supported by so many clubs across Oxfordshire.
“Witney RFC has some fantastic facilities and this rugby camp is just the start of what will be a great working relationship between the two clubs. Over the three days we’re hoping that all players involved will develop their skill level and understanding of rugby, but most importantly grow their enjoyment of rugby.
“These camps are a great way for London Welsh to get out to the clubs and meet all the budding rugby players of the future and promote the fact that there is Aviva Premiership rugby on everyone’s door step.
“Through the work that the London Welsh Community Team is doing in schools and clubs, it has never been more accessible for everyone in Oxfordshire.”
Ex-Witney RFC president, now liaison officer to London Welsh, Mick Routledge, said: “We started working with London Welsh about a season ago and I really like the fact they’re a real community club and that fits Witney.
“For us it’s about finding a club in the county that the lads can get a bit of interaction and loyalty to, because I think we’re a bit lost as a county. London Welsh being in the community feels good for the club.
“We call ourselves a community club, we’ve invested quite a lot of money in the club and to see Witney involved with a Premiership side is good for both. The club motto is Play with all to win and it’s about making sure the community is involved and we’ve got people here from Witney, Chipping Norton and all over the county.
“It shows the club off and that’s why we’ve invested in it, for these sort of events. It’s a great start to the season.”
The Club continues to reinforce its relationship with the people, businesses and communities across Oxfordshire and has adopted the strap-line ‘Premiership Rugby in Oxford – Be part of it’.
