ANDY Robinson vowed to address the Bristol errors that led to opposition scores, following his sideâs 34-19 pre-season defeat against Newport Gwent Dragons at Clifton RFC.
In Bristolâs opening pre-season game, Robinsonâs GKIPA Championship side competed well with a strong Dragons side for long periods â but were undone by a couple of mistakes that led to tries.
Bristol face Aviva Premiership side London Irish on Friday, before further warm-up games against Clifton and Plymouth Albion â and the director of rugby said it was important his players quickly learn from their mistakes.
âIt was important for us to get a good hit out,â said Robinson. âWe finished the season on June 4 and weâre a little bit behind in terms of pre-season, so we wanted a game like that â and I thought the guys worked hard in the game. Thatâs important.
âBut we got punished for our errors again. We were hit by some turnovers early on and a couple of penalties, which gave the Dragons the field position and allowed them to get an early lead. So there are a few things we need to address for ourselves.
âPlayers are learning to play with each other â and rugby can be an unforgiving game at times. The errors we made, we got punished for; thatâs what happened last year and itâs something weâve got to get sorted out.â
Robinson said much of what Bristol are doing in pre-season is designed to prepare them for Worcesterâs physicality in their Championship opener at Ashton Gate on September 7.
âDragons are a tough opposition â and thatâs what weâre trying to look at for ourselves in terms of testing ourselves,â he said. âWeâve got Worcester first up and weâve got to be physically ready to take them on.
âWeâll make a number of changes to the team for London Irish. There will be opportunities for guys who havenât played in this game to play in that one.â
