AN annual charity rugby sevens tournament in Castle Cary has raised more than £3,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Kay’s Cary Sevens was held in memory of former player Kay Booker who lost her battle with cancer five years ago.

This year the tournament raised £3,500 for the charity with teams journeying from across the region to compete.

Castle Cary Rugby Football Club chairman Paul Hinchliffe said the club was delighted with the tournament’s continued success.

He said: “We are delighted to help out a local charity that’s so special to us as a club. Kay will always be remembered at this club and I am really pleased that we are able to offer a significant donation to Macmillan.”

Penny Steiner, chairman of the Castle Cary and District branch of Macmillan Cancer Support said the donation was vital to the charity.

She said: “To receive a generous donation does so much for the charity and lifts morale across our branch.

“We do a huge amount of fundraising and when we get something as significant as this from the rugby club it does mean so much to us.”
