Oakley steps down as Devonport Services" director of rugby

DEVONPORT Services’ rugby supremo Dave Oakley has quit his role at the city club to rejoin the Royal Navy.

Oakley, director of rugby at the Rectory, is now on a short-term three-year contract at Devonport Dockyard as a full-time reserve member of the navy.

However, Oakley, who oversaw Services’ Western Counties West league operations, will continue to be part of the club.

Oakley’s rugby role at the Rectory included being director of rugby.

Oakley said he believed the post’s responsibilities would be spread around among other club members.

He said: “Although I have severed my ties with the Royal Navy Rugby Union, I will continue to be part of Devonport Services (DSRFC) in any way that they want me.

“I do not believe that DSRFC will advertise for a replacement director of rugby as those responsibilities have been shared back out to the capable volunteers and committee members within the club.”

Services first pre-season game is against a Fiji XV on Saturday, September 16 (2.30pm) at the Rectory.
