Spalding aces live the life of an England rugby star

Spalding Rugby Club players were put through their paces after being invited by QBE, official insurance partner of England Rugby, to an exclusive power endurance and nutrition session at The Lensbury Club in London.

Squad members Chris Douglas, Tim Waltham, Chris Eggleton, Tom Duerden, Will Shields, Harry Lane and Matt Waine tackled a gruelling fitness session hosted by England fitness coaches Paul Stridgeon and Neil Parsley as well as head of athletic performance Matt Parker.

Spalding won a national grassroots rugby competition, QBE Hit Squad, back in January and were rewarded with specialist coaching sessions by England World Cup winner and QBE Hit Squad coach Richard Hill.

Braving the mid-twenty degree heat, the players were joined by the other Hit Squad winners and taken through the type of session that is regularly executed by the England team. The drills included a pushing sled, cycle machines and exercise ball wrestling.

For Eggleton, the experience provided some key learnings that can be applied for next season’s campaign after the club’s play-offs success.

“It was such an eye opening experience to basically live the life of an England rugby player in camp for the day,” he said. “Most of the drills we’ve never executed before and can apply to our own pre-season programme.

“This, alongside a more balanced nutritional approach, will have a huge impact and see the team in the best condition yet going into a season.”
