A rare rugby collection has been sold by John Taylor auction room in Louth for £10,000 and will be housed at the World Rugby Museum in Twickenham for future generations to see.
Sporting memorabilia is becoming more and more popular as time goes on and this impressive collection was built up by Tom Smith, who was part of the 1908 British Rugby (Anglo-Welsh) tour of New Zealand, Australia and Canada.
James Laverack from John Taylors said: “This is an extremely rare collection and one we have never seen before and it received a good deal of interest which even included perspective buyers from Australia and New Zealand.
“It is a fascinating lot that tells a story and it is nice to see that it has been sold in one single lot so all the items stays together.
“It really has gone to the best home in at the World Rugby Museum in Twickenham where it can be preserved for future generations.â€
The collection includes three caps (Anglo-Welsh, Midland Counties and Leicester Tigers), three Jerseys from the 1908 tour (New Zealand All Black, Auckland Blue and New South Wales), the Anglo-Welsh blazer badge and hat ribbons and a Leicester Tigers club tie.
In addition there is an album and a folder containing a large quantity of items from the 1908 tour, including match programs, menu cards, signatures, postcards, newspaper cuttings, letters home, souvenir coconut and a boomerang.
