missed Llanelli legend Lewis ‘Lewi’ Jones.

A Facebook group — Lewis ‘Lewi’ Jones — already has nearly 3,000 members, with hundreds sharing their tales of the Warriors linesman.

Among those paying respect to Lewi were some famous names from the world of rugby.

Rupert Moon tweeted: “So sad. R.I.P @jones_lewi King of the @LlanelliRFC Stradey Touchline! #Legend #RedCard #Off”

And Scott Quinnell (right) added: “Lewi RIP my friend. He was a great man of Llanelli. I will always remember him as assistant ref to the assistant ref in Stradey Park.”

Photos and stories have been shared on Facebook, with many people recalling seeing Lewi enjoying a pint at The Greyhound.

Others looked back on the times Lewi would red card players and even people in the crowd as he ran the line at Stradey Park and Parc y Scarlets.

He has been descibed as “part of the fabric” of Llanelli, with friend Donna John adding on Facebook: “Thank you Lewi(s) for being part of Llanelli that so many people will always remember.

“You put a smile on people’s faces by your presence.

“So many of us would be so pleased and privileged to be remembered by so many as part of Scarlet town as you will undoubtedly be.

“You did well boy and you should be so very very proud of the impact you have had and the memories you have given us all.”

Simon Gilmour said: “I grew up a couple of doors down from Lewi and his dad.

“He was a big part of my childhood.

“I can’t remember the number of times he sent me off the rugby field in Kidwelly when I was playing football there as a kid.

“Great guy. RIP Lew and don’t worry, I know your name.”

A funeral has been arranged at St Mary’s Church, Kidwelly, at 10.30am on Friday, August 16. Friends of the Warriors linesman have suggested holding up red cards at the end of the service in honour of Lewi’s fondness for sending players off the pitch.
