Rugby Union ARU confirm Deans" departure

Ewen McKenzie is expected to be named new Australia coach on Tuesday after Robbie Deans’ departure was confirmed by the Australian Rugby Union.

After 74 Tests in charge of the Wallabies since 2008, Deans is no longer in charge – with the ARU saying he had stepped down.

Deans was the first foreign coach of the Wallabies and while he led the team to Tri-Nations success in 2011 and finished third at the World Cup, there were several low points.

The New Zealander thanked the ARU for their support and wished Australia all the best.

“I wish to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in Australian rugby for their support through the duration of my tenure,” Deans said in a statement.

“It has been a rewarding five years and I am proud of all that we have achieved.

“Most especially I would like to thank the players for their efforts and wish them all the best going forward.”

Queensland Reds director of coaching McKenzie, who was part of the 1991 World Cup-winning Wallabies team and served as an assistant coach under Rod Macqueen and Eddie Jones, looks set to be named as Deans’ replacement.

ARU chief executive Bill Pulver said Deans was one of the world’s best coaches and will name the new boss in Brisbane on Tuesday.

“Robbie came into the job in 2008, improved our away record almost immediately, delivered a Tri-Nations title in 2011, and has been a significant part of a Lions Tour that over shadows any other rugby event in Australia since the 2003 Rugby World Cup,” he said.

“We wish him all the best in his future endeavours and to build further on what is one of world rugby’s most impressive coaching resumes.

“As a consequence of a coaching review process that has been ongoing through 2013, we are also in a position to make a further announcement on the coaching position – and name Robbie’s replacement – later today.”
