Malaysia win Singapore Rugby Union Club Sevens with victory over SCC in the ...

Malaysia received a perfect boost ahead of the HSBC Asian Sevens Series by beating Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) Gold 24-10 to win the Singapore Rugby Union (SRU) Club Sevens title yesterday.

It was a good show by the Malaysian side who were without seven key players now competing in the World University Games in Kazan, Russia. Credit must also go to SCC Gold who performed excellently in a high quality final.

Captained by Syahir Asyraff Rosli, Malaysia beat SCC Gold 33-5 and Bedok Kings B 35-7 in the group stage. The Malaysians then demolished Singapore Wanderers 41-0 in the quarter-finals and Singapore Rugby Club Bucks 33-12 in the semi-finals.

Team manager Fahmi Jalil was pleased with the team’s efforts as they were only eyeing a top-four finish.

“It’s a great victory for us because this is a top-quality rugby tournament. Teams like SCC and the Bucks have very strong foreign and local players. But our seniors like Amin (Jamaluddin), Izwan (Abu Bakar), Syahir and Anwarrul (Aswad Ahmad) deserved the plaudits. They were fantastic out there today and really carried the team,” said Fahmi.

“Now we’ll go straight back into training to prepare for the Malaysia Sevens. We have about four weeks before the start of the Malaysia Sevens and we’ll have to get cracking right away.”

The HSBC Asian Sevens Series will kick off with the Malaysia Sevens in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 31.
