WHILE Britain and Ireland celebrated the Lions series win in Australia, one member of the last Lions squad to tour Australia was in Helensburgh launching the countdown to Helensburgh Rugby Club’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

Gordon Bulloch, who represented the Lions in 2001 and 2005, visited Helensburgh to hear plans for the club’s Golden Jubilee weekend, which will take place in August.

The former Scotland captain, who now coaches Glasgow Warriors youth teams commented: “It was a pleasure to visit Helensburgh Rugby Club to help launch the countdown to the anniversary celebrations.

“Local clubs, like Helensburgh, play a vital part in the community and people give up so much of their time to ensure its success.”

The club has arranged several events over the weekend of the 23-25 August to celebrate the landmark, including a meet and greet on the Friday night and a 50th anniversary gala ball on the Saturday evening.

A special rugby match will also take place on the Saturday featuring Helensburgh Presidents Invitation XV and the Pigbarians.

The Pigbarians is Scotland’s unique rugby club, composed of many well-known Scottish rugby players, and promotes the spirit of rugby.

As well as celebrating the history of the club, the weekend will also raise money for a charity that supports injured rugby players and their families, Bulloch added: “It’s fantastic that the anniversary weekend will also raise money for Hearts and Balls – it’s a hugely important charity and it’s great that the club is able to support its work.”

Bulloch also unveiled that Absolute Renewable Energy (UK) Ltd are the official sponsor of the event, an announcement that came as a huge boost for the club, Alistair Hart, president of Helensburgh Rugby Club, said: “On behalf of the club, I would like to thank Gordon and Absolute Renewable Energy for supporting our Golden Jubilee.

“We have a very exciting weekend planned and we hope all our members and the community will join us to celebrate.”
