Blues stalwart Greg Bird believes the NSW VB Blues are in their best position since 2008 to win the State of Origin series they have craved so badly, for so long.
Bird, a veteran of 13 Origin games for New South Wales, admitted the time had come for the Blues to end Queenslandâs dynasty and that victory on Wednesday night would be the highlight of his career.
âThis is the best position we’ve been in since 2008,â Bird said.
âWe’ve got a home decider and everyone knows how much the team lifts when we have a big New South Wales crowd⦠this oneâs gonna be pretty special.â
Having made his debut for the Blues in 2007, Bird is aware of the hurt New South Wales players and supporters have suffered over the previous seven seasons; and declared the Blues have no demons from their 26-6 Game Two defeat.
âItâs been a long time coming for a Blues team to come out and play a good solid series and I think we’ve been in close the last few times and hopefully this is our time.
âWe’ve brushed that (Game Two) off. They got the start and we couldn’t recover.
âWe have to make sure we start equally as good and not give away as much possession.
âIf we win, it will be the biggest game of my career. The oneâs you win are the oneâs youâll remember for the rest of your career and I’ve got all the confidence that this will be one of them.â
Despite being under an injury cloud, Bird revealed he was confident of taking the field on Wednesday night and that his preparation would not be compromised.
âItâs a little tender but Iâll give it a few days and try to run on Friday.
âI’ve done the same injury before on my other foot and only missed a week before coming back to play and it didn’t bother me â and that helps my mindset.
âIt wonât change my preparation⦠my job is pretty simple. I play in tight, so itâs just run hard, tackle hard and maintain the line speed.
âThe edge guys are the ones who need to be more concerned about the structures of our football, so the middle guys like me, Gal and Jimmy Tamou will work hard and watch them go.â
