Rugby Heaven

The Melbourne Rebels capped one of the most extraordinary clean-outs in Australian rugby history with the news they had parted company with Wallabies playmaker Kurtley Beale on Saturday.
The path has now been cleared for Beale’s widely tipped homecoming to NSW after two difficult years with the Rebels.
Beale followed incumbent Test No.10 James O’Connor out the door in the same week head coach Damien Hill was replaced by Wallabies coaching co-ordinator Tony McGahan, and less than three weeks after the club’s private owners handed control back to the Victorian Rugby Union.
Foundation Rebels captain Gareth Delve is also leaving, along with players Cooper Vuna, Ged Robinson, Richard Kingi and halfback Nick Phipps, who was poached by the Waratahs. The club is also operating under new chief executive Rob Clarke, who took over from Steve Boland earlier this year.
While Beale’s departure was widely expected after a season dominated by off-field problems and a stint in rehabilitation, Rebels management and players were still open to retaining him last week.
But after Beale decided to stay in Sydney at the end of the British and Irish Lions three-Test series, rather than join his teammates in Melbourne for the club’s final game of the season, the writing was on the wall. The former Waratah was ready to come home and the Rebels were better off making a clean break.
”By no means is this all negative but my job and Tony McGahan’s job is to look to the future and to make decisions in the best interest of the club for the future, and that’s what we’re doing,” Clarke said.
Beale has not played for the Rebels since their round-12 game against the Chiefs on May 3, when he was handed his second suspension of the year for alcohol-related issues.
His first, a four-match ban, came after Beale punched Vuna and Delve at the end of the side’s ill-fated tour of South Africa in March. He served out the ban in Sydney but, with the Lions series looming, kept fit training under the supervision of then-Wallabies coach Robbie Deans and ARU rehabilitation co-ordinator Terry Condon.
Returning for the Rebels as a second-half substitute against the Chiefs, Beale scored one try and sparked a team comeback that fell just short. The next night, after driving friends to and from a Melbourne Storm match, Beale went to a party at a teammate’s house and was seen drinking there.
The Rebels were informed and Beale was stood down again. A week later he checked himself into a two-week treatment program before returning to rugby for club side Randwick and playing all three Tests for the Wallabies.
”He’s a well-liked individual in the team and in the club but his personal welfare has to take priority because rugby is only a component of his life,” Clarke said of the club’s decision to part ways with Beale.
”The decision that we’ve made is looking to the future and – as I’ve made clear – the team dynamics, the organisational culture, is something that has to be reinforced positively at every point.”
Beale and O’Connor courted controversy during the Lions series when they were photographed at 4am at a fast-food outlet days before the second Test, missed a bus to a training session in the lead-up to the deciding Test and missed the final team meeting the morning after the Wallabies’ 41-16 loss in Sydney.
While O’Connor did not publicly cause any off-field problems for the Rebels during his injury-plagued two years at the club, it is believed his brash and confident nature put him offside with some teammates. Scott Higginbotham last week said the Wallabies five-eighth did not fit into the team dynamics in Melbourne.
However, Clarke would not go as far as to declare a problem with the Rebels’ early recruiting policy which also brought Danny Cipriani, whose troubled history was well known beforehand, to the club.
