A BASINGSTOKE teenager has moved a step closer to playing rugby for Wales by being selected for the Welsh Exiles squad.

Ewan Watson who is 14 and lives in Elgar Close, Brighton Hill, attended a two-day training camp at Llandovery College before representing the Welsh Exiles in a tournament.

The Welsh Exiles is a team for boys who qualify to represent Wales but live outside of the country. Watson was born in England but could play for Wales as his grandmother is Welsh.

“I do feel more Welsh than English,” he said. “I support Wales in rugby, visit the country a lot and am really close to my Welsh family.”

The tournament saw the team take on a number of sides from around Wales. Centre Watson started all three of the Exiles’ games, being replaced at half-time of the first encounter but staying on for the entirety of the second match, helping his side to reach the final.

Watson started the final and even got on the scoresheet – but the Exiles lost by three tries to two.

“I scored an interception try in the final,” the Brighton Hill Community School pupil said. “The opposition secured a turnover and were looking to move the ball but I managed to get in the way and run in to score.

“I really enjoyed the camp. It was nice to meet new people and good to test myself against some really good opposition.”
