Lyn Jones lined up for the return to Welsh rugby

LYN Jones is being lined up for a return to Welsh rugby — at the Dragons.

The former Ospreys head coach is understood to be the man the Gwent outfit want to revive their fortunes after the worst season in the region’s history.

The Dragons hope they can lure him back from London Welsh to take over as their director of rugby, with Darren Edwards staying as head coach and Robert Beale moving across into a new role, possibly as team manager.

Kingsley Jones is the fourth man on the region’s radar.

He is believed to have commitments with Russia through to the next World Cup but could be drafted in to work with the forwards, a role he filled under Jones at London Welsh.

Rob Appleyard is apparently leaving Rodney Parade.

The planned changes come after a disastrous campaign in which the Dragons won only six out of 22 league matches and saw doubts cast over their future.

If they do land Jones it will be significant, with the ex-Neath coach having a reputation for getting the best out of underdog teams and players. He oversaw a relegation campaign at London Welsh last term but emerged with his reputation intact after the club proved competitive despite cash and recruitment problems. Indeed, he so impressed observers over the Bridge that he was nominated for the Aviva Premiership coach-of-the-year award.

One of his goals at the Dragons would no doubt be to secure Heineken Cup qualification, though he would need backing off the board to increase the likelihood of that happening.

The Dragons have lost Dan Lydiate to Racing Metro but have brought in a number of new players, including the rated Fijian Netani Talei in the back row.

Toby Faletau is out of contract at the end of next season and they will be pushed to keep him but will stand more chance if their fortunes are on the up.

Jones had a short spell at the region in 2008-09, working as attack coach under Paul Turner.

Edwards is understood to have a year left on his contract. The Dragons hope that bringing in someone experienced above him will significantly add to their prospects.

Meanwhile, the draw for the 2013-14 Heineken Cup takes place in Dublin this afternoon. The Scarlets and Ospreys are both in the third tier of seeds.
