Force is not so strong for Lions

Indeed, they are fifth of those five Australian sides this season. The Force are 13th of the 15 all told and behind the even-newer Melbourne Rebels with a grand total of four wins in 13 matches, although they did record a victory and a draw against Queensland Reds, the 2011 champions.

The Force are coached by Michael Foley and Steve Meehan, familiar in England for their time with Bath.

Foley has had to juggle limited resources because his team are playing New South Wales Waratahs at the weekend and he is unwilling to allow any player to back up.

It is still the case that by fielding a third of his best side today and two-thirds on Sunday, Foley is prioritising the routine game rather than the Lions – as regrettable as it is astonishing, given that the Lions’ presence Down Under is every 12 years.
