Child abuser David Tweed (53), a former councillor in Ballymena, Co Antrim, is serving an eight-year prison sentence after he was convicted by a jury of 13 charges of indecent assault, gross indecency and incitement to commit gross indecency.
Tweed committed the crimes over an eight-year period.
The verdicts were arrived at by majority decisions by a jury of 10 women and two men at Antrim Crown Court after the trial last November.
Tweed was sentenced in January.
A spokeswoman for the Northern Ireland Courts and Tribunal Service yesterday confirmed to the Irish Independent that Tweed had lodged legal papers in a bid to secure an appeal against his convictions and sentence.
No date has yet been set for an appeal hearing.
Tweed rose to prominence as a rugby star during the 1980s and 1990s.
