He is one of the most handsome men in Rugby with a huge gay following.


Now, England star James Haskell says he is surprised that more sportsmen have not come out as homosexual in an interview with the UK’s best selling gay magazine.


Haskell – a heterosexual – posed for a photoshoot on the front cover of Attitude and and discussed the taboo surrounding homosexuality in sport.

Former British and Irish Lion Gareth Thomas came out in 2009 but that has merely served as the exception to prove the rule.


‘I’ve got a big gay following on Twitter so it’s an honour for me to be in Attitude,’ said 28-year-old Wasps player Haskell.


‘I’m surprised that across all sports more people haven’t come out because going by sheer statistics there have to be lots of gay sportsmen, right?


‘I hate the idea of people feeling they can’t just be themselves and personally I wouldn’t give a s**t if any of my team-mates were gay.’

Haskall missed England’s recent tour of Argentina with a knee injury.


Former Leeds United footballer Robbie Rogers came out as gay earlier this year and promptly quit the sport worried about the response he would get from opposing players and fans.


However, after a positive response, the American returned to professional sport and made his debut with MLS side LA Galaxy last season.


Fellow American athelete Jason Collins, 34, also became the first person from a major US sport to come out when the NBA player announced his sexuality in a Sports Illustrated interview in April.


West Ham United winger Matt Jarvis has also posed on the front cover of Attitude magazine this year.


The iPad edition of Attitude is available to download now, the print magazine is out next week.
