So James Horwill is in elite company with Nick Farr-Jones from 1989 and John Eales from 2001 â two giants of Aussie rugby whose battle honours also include World Cup triumphs. Eales in particular, as a lock like Horwill, is an obvious reference point.
âHe told me to be a leader, not a captain, to lead by what I do,â said Horwill. âNot many people get this chance. I was the 77th person ever to captain the Wallabies and I feel very privileged.
âThis is a huge responsibility but also a huge honour.â
Horwill, 28, has not led Australia for 18 months, the 2012 international programme being a write-off after a serious hamstring injury.
His Test captaincy record, mainly comprising the 2011 World Cup, is a decent enough six wins and two defeats.
âA series with the Lions is right up there, a once-in-a-career opportunity for the guys lucky enough to be here,â said Horwill.
âFor us, the World Cup would be the pinnacle of the game but this has to be a close second, what with all the build-up and the Lions games against the provincial sides that make it unique as a traditional tour.â
Australia"s James Horwill proud to lead Wallabies against Lions
