Catalans star Elliott Whitehead hopes for England recall

“It was good to get called up but I know it was just training and hopefully I’ll get the call at the end of the year”

McNamara, who is working for Sydney Roosters, has given Whitehead various things to work on.

But Whitehead is convinced he’s only in touching distance of his England dream because he quit Bradford last year.

He gambled on leaving his hometown club part-way through the season to join the Dragons, even though he couldn’t speak French.

But it’s a risk Whitehead says he’s glad he took, adding: “I felt I had to move from Bradford to progress my career.

“I feel I’m playing better now and I’m more confident in myself. I’m playing well but there is a bit more I can do.

“At first it was hard because I’d never been to a different club, never mind a French club where no one really speaks English.

“But the lifestyle is a lot better than in Bradford. I live right on the beach and every morning I have breakfast outside.”

Seventh-placed Catalan travel to Huddersfield, the team above them, next Sunday.
