Welsh rugby legend Shane Williams "overwhelmed" after receiving MBE

The prince of the rugby field met up with the Prince of Wales to collect his MBE at Buckingham Palace today.

Wales’ record try-scorer Shane Williams said he was “very humbled and overwhelmed” as he picked up his gong.

The 36-year-old wing played his last game for Wales in December 2012, running in his record 58th try for his country.

He said: “It has been a surprise. I found it quite strange to be receiving an award from Prince Charles for playing sport which is something I just love doing. As far as I have been concerned I was just there to play rugby so to receive an award like this is just a bonus on top.

“I still can’t believe that I have received it, to be honest with you.

“It does take a long time to sink in. This is my first time at Buckingham Palace so that is overwhelming before even receiving the award. It has all been a bit of a blur really and it is something I will reflect upon later tonight. I am very humbled and overwhelmed by the experience.”

Williams, who was at the event with his wife Gail,  has retired from international rugby and is now a semi-professional player/coach based in Japan. He said that he is loving “bringing the youngsters through” and added that his language skills need a bit of work as his Japanese is “very limited”.
