Mark Anscombe has warned his Ulster side attitude will be key when they host in-form Saracens in their Heineken Cup quarter-final at Ravenhill on Saturday.

The Irish province, winners of the tournament in 1999, were the only side to go through the pool stage unbeaten, giving them home advantage for their last-eight clash.But their build-up to the fixture hit a snag when they lost at Cardiff Blues in the Pro 12 last time out and New Zealander Anscombe has made it clear a repeat will not be acceptable.

“We had nine players out there with more than 100 games for the union. That’s a lot of experience on the pitch and I would have liked to think we didn’t need kick up the backside. I thought we were above that. That attitude should be there from the start,” said Anscombe.

“There’s a lot of hard work to be done this week. But we were the only team to qualify from the pool stage unbeaten so there’s plenty to get excited about.”

Scrum-half Ruan Pienaar should return from a shoulder injury in time to face Saracens, while captain Johann Muller is expected to be fit after being withdrawn against the Blues due to a calf problem.

For Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall, Saturday will see him return to the province he represented as player and coach.

The Aviva Premiership outfit are desperate to make the last step to a Heineken Cup final having reached the semi-finals last year, and the quarter-finals 12 months previously.

Sarries beat Ulster 26-17 when the two teams met at this stage of the competition last season, with Will Fraser and Chris Ashton crossing for tries and Owen Farrell adding 17 points from the tee.

They head to Ravenhill in good domestic form after bonus-point wins over Harlequins and Wasps, and having won four of their five European meetings against Ulster.

“We were pleased to go to Wasps and get another four tries and five points and it was a really good work out for Ulster,” said McCall.

“To have started this sequence of games with two bonus point wins against Harlequins at Wembley and Wasps at Adams Park has been very pleasing.”
