Rugby Union: Phoenix second string win South Yorkshire Merit League

Doncaster Phoenix proved they have got plenty in reserve by winning the South Yorkshire Merit League – and in some style.

The Castle Park club’s second XV topped the table with a one hundred per cent winning record, including sizeable victories over Sheffield 4 (82-22), Wath 3 (59-0) and Old Crossleyans (60-0).

Skipper Carey Thomas led from the front and ended the season as top points scorer.

His experience was also complemented by the inclusion of several ex-Doncaster Colts, including Dom Johnson (top try scorer with 11 tries), Josh Clayton, Ed Miles, Josh John, Adam Sadler and Brad Farrell, who all played their part in a successful campaign.

Phoenix also tested themselves in a number of friendlies against higher ranked sides and ran Morley and Huddersfield very close. In total they lost just seven out of 26 games.

Phoenix 2s still hope to complete a league and cup double and met Thorne last night in the semi-final of the South Yorkshire Cup. (Photo courtesy of F.S.P Images).
